It is 130 kg (287 pounds) lighter that the road car.
McLaren, like Lotus has always tried to keep weight to a minimum in order to maximize performance. Even the Artura, with its complex plug-in hybrid engine, weighs in at 1,395 kg (3.075 lb) in its lightest form. It was unveiled today, just before it arrived at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The race car equivalent has lost 130 kg (287 lbs) in order to conform with GT4 regulations which don’t allow hybrids.
The Artura GT4 weighs more than 100kg (220 lbs) than the 570S GT4 that it replaces. The diet has been improved by switching from a V8 engine to a smaller V6. Even the six-cylinder unit is strong enough to compete on the track. The road car’s battery pack has been replaced by the 110-liter (29 gallon) fuel cell, and an ancillary drive system. McLaren claims that the weight of the road car is still low and balanced by repurposing this space.
The Artura GT4 has a simplified powertrain and a new seven-speed gearbox. This replaces the eight-speed manual in the road car, where the electric motor is used to reverse. The new Artura GT4 has shorter gear ratios and a rear-mounted mechanical limited slip differential. This reduces brake wear. The fuel consumption has dropped while the braking cooling efficiency has increased.
The motorsport version has a more aggressive aerodynamic kit, allowing for greater downforce than the previous 570S GT4. McLaren designed a custom front splitter and rear wing that can be adjusted to suit different tracks. According to McLaren, the race car is as safe as the 720S GT3 which has the driver’s seat as well as adjustable pedals.
The McLaren Artura GT4 will make its public debut at the Goodwood FoS, Sussex on June 23, before it takes on the 2023 BMW M4 GT4. It will cost about PS200,000 without options, or approximately PS10,000 more than the street legal supercar.
