McLaren Hybrid Confirmed For 2021, New Electrified Platform Revealed
The new underpinnings will allow for pure electric models.

McLaren has been launching the Speedtail and P1 supercars in the past. Woking’s boys and girls are now taking it to the next level by creating a new platform where electrification is top priority. Although the British supercar manufacturer is keeping the details secret, the first production model that will benefit from the underpinnings is expected to arrive in 2021.

You don’t have to be concerned that future McLarens will be heavier because of the additional hardware needed to accommodate a hybrid engine. The new architecture uses carbon fiber more extensively to reduce fat and make the cars safer than previous models. The company claims that its new platform uses “innovative, world first processes and techniques to reduce excess mass, decrease overall vehicle weight, and further improve safety attributes.”

Next year’s electrified supercar is only the beginning. The platform is flexible and will be used to support a number of McLarens in the second decade of regular production. According to Mike Flewitt, McLaren Automotive CEO and chief executive officer, the new MonoCell chassis is more durable than the MP4-12C original MonoCell chassis.

He stated that the new platform would allow for the first pure-electric McLaren without stating when. Mike Flewitt stated that “winning the weight race is a priority” as electrification is gradually taking over. McLaren spent the equivalent of $65 million on the McLaren composites technology centre in Sheffield, North England to achieve this goal. Inaugurated in 2018, the facility was used for the development of a new, carbon-intensive platform which will be the foundation for a range of models over the next few years. The 570S replacement, which we spotted on a test mule and it looks a lot like the GT, will lead the way. Although it is believed to be using a twin-turbo V6 instead of the tested V8, nothing is confirmed.
