It is produced by Daimler, and shares its platform as the Mercedes-Benz Econic.
Daimler Trucks will bring its MercedesBenz Econic special vehicle for municipal waste collection (waste-collection), to the North American market. It will be marketed under the Freightliner Econic S.D. The two vehicles will share a common platform and be manufactured at the largest truck plant in Germany, Worth. The two vehicles share the same low entry concept, with an extra-large, low-entry driver’s cabin, and a nearly 360-degree panoramic field of vision. This is extremely helpful for city traffic.
The Mercedes-Benz Trucks model was assembled in Germany. However, the North American version will be shipped to Gaffney (South Carolina) where Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation, will perform final assembly and adjust to meet local market needs. The engine produces a maximum power output of 350 horsepower (261kilowatts) from the six-cylinder, inline diesel engine. An automatic gearbox channels the power to the wheels for ease of use.
Daimler is the current market leader in North America, holding a market share around 40% in the medium-duty, and heavy-duty segments. The new Econic SD is the entry point for the Freightliner brand’s local division.
