Meet The RVian: A GMC Motorhome-Inspired Take on Rivian’s Delivery Van

It’s a boxy, all-electric home far from home.

Rivian’s partnership last year with Amazon finally paid off – an electric delivery van. Amazon is very keen to reduce its carbon footprint. However, the boxy EV has begun turning some of the creative gears. Its squared-off dimensions and high roof make it a great candidate for a motorhome conversion. That’s exactly what Alex Alexanian did when he used the GMC Motorhome that the automaker made in the 1970s.

This rendering was posted to the Classics GMC Motorhomes facebook group. It shows the large Amazon Van extended and adding a third axle at the rear. The result is identical to the GMC Motorhome. The large windows along the sides are modeled after the GMC’s windows layout. They are located behind the driver cabin and one at the rear. This would allow for lots of natural light. The cutely named RVian, however, lacks the 1970s wild aesthetics (below).

GMC introduced the Motorhome concept in late 1960s and launched it in 1972. The Motorhome was offered in TransMode, which was an unmodified shell that customers could personalize. It was also available in two lengths: 23 feet and 26 feet. GMC launched the Motorhome in the same year that Chevy began to explore the possibility of creating its own called Chalet Royale . This featured a unique front fascia with flat glass and a unique front fascia. It was never produced.

As automakers shift towards electric vehicles, an all-electric motorhome is a tempting idea. Amazon expects to have 10,000 electric delivery trucks by 2022, and 100,000 by 2030. It’s more than a van. The Rivian van has driver-assist technology and the most recent safety gadgets. It also features a 360-degree camera system. All of these systems can be integrated into a motorhome. Motorhomes are changing their operation due to electricity. A fully electric motorhome feels natural.
