AMG boss: The future of the roadster is currently “under discussion.”
The SLC has been around since 2011. It was called SLK back then. This model is the oldest in Mercedes’ extensive lineup. We first heard rumors about the model’s possible demise a little over a decade ago. But, we haven’t heard anything since. Tobias Moers, AMG’s boss, said that the company is still unsure about the fate for the hardtop two-seater.
Given that AMG is apparently planning a standalone model that would compete with the Porsche 718 Cayman, we won’t be surprised to see the SLC go. It wouldn’t make sense to keep the SLC around if such a model is approved, given the low sales.
The future of the SLC is uncertain at the moment. However, the larger SL will see another generation. Moers stated that the company will make the transition from a grand tourer model to a performance-focused model. Moers denied that AMG was in charge of the development.
As a refresher, Daimler Chairman announced at March’s 2018 Geneva Motor Show that the all-new SL will be a “real wow vehicle, a stunning car”, adding that it would be bolder to evoke the model’s most successful periods. We won’t see it until the end of this decade, though it’s not yet known when.
