The car can lurch on its own without having any passengers.
Since 2015, Mercedes-Benz has made significant progress since adopting autonomous driving technology. The company has been approved to test the vehicle on public roads and plans to introduce its SAE Level 3 Advanced Driver Assistance system on American soil by the end.
Mercedes-AMG was also able to acquire the self-driving technology. You wouldn’t believe that Mercedes-AMG’s high performance division would use it to drive on a track.
AMG released a video, embedded above, showing how far driverless technology has come.
Although the video is quite long, we embedded it at timestamps when the SMG GT 63S 4-Door Coupe ran a hot lap. We did not need any input from the driver. It was able to accelerate, brake at corners and follow a pre-set racing track for the “hot lap”, though it was limited to 106 mph (170 km/h). The car reached high speeds without any human intervention, which was quite insane and freakish.
We saw a prototype, but it was not the final product. AMG actually showed us a clip of the car doing hot laps with only two people in front, just before we saw the entire stint.
You can also see the rest of the video, which preceded the hot laps. It shows some practical applications for the autonomous vehicle tech.
Mercedes is a leader in self-driving technology. Mercedes has already stated that it will take legal responsibility in the event of an autonomous tech crash. It is clear that the future is near, and could be there by the end of the year.
