You don’t have to be boring to use proof hybrids.
Mercedes-AMG presented the GT-4-Door Coupe. The concept was a hybrid powertrain that included a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8 engine and an electric motor. The engine, which is normally located at the front of the vehicle, was combined with the e motor at the back to produce an incredible total output of 805 horsepower (600 megawatts).
Affalterbach has since confirmed that the hybrid powertrain will be made into a production model. The GT 4-Door Coupe in the Project One 63 S is already the most powerful Mercedes production vehicle, but the rumored GT73 will add around 800 horsepower to the mix. It’s expected to be released as soon as next year, according to Autocar.
A few spy photos were actually taken by the British magazine (see link below). The pictures show an intriguing prototype with an intricate electrical system. This likely suggests that the vehicle was equipped with a hybrid powertrain. Autocar also learned from spy photographers that the test mule drove away with no engine noises, so it must have been in electric mode.
Mercedes has used the “73” badge before for special cars like the SL73. It could also be seen on the flagship G-Class models and the next-generation S-Class. Trademark filings from February 2018 revealed namesplates such a S73 and a S73. The three-pointed star has also registered the “GT73 4Matic+”, which will be the company’s answer the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid with its 677-hp output.
The Future of AMG
The GT63 S’s extra hardware will not add much weight to the GT73. This will reduce the GT73’s acceleration time from 3.2 seconds to 3.0 seconds (0-100 km/h) The hybrid component will allow the car to run pure electric for up to 31 miles (50 km) in addition to boosting the sedan’s acceleration.
Expect the GT73 to be a premium product when it finally arrives on the market over the $159,000 GT63 S.
