German media reports that Mercedes-AMG is planning to introduce a successor to the SLR in 2018. Auto Bild reports that Daimler’s performance department is considering whether the engine should be placed in the front, as in the last SLR, or if it should move to a mid-engined layout. The coupe will be the first model to go on the market, followed by the Black Series flagship model and the roadster.
According to the report, the SLR could be front-engined. It will have a turbocharged V6 engine and an electric motor that will produce 650 PS (478kW) combined. The vehicle would be aerodynamically designed and feature a “new door design”. The plan is to produce 3,000 cars per annum at EUR250,000-300,000.
Another scenario shows a mid-engined SLR that makes extensive use of carbon fibre and is powered by a turbo V8 which is teamed up to two electric motors, generating 1,050 PS (772kW). This would be a competitor to the McLaren P1, LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. It will only be 500-750 units, with a starting price of EUR1 million if it is approved.
