It looks like a great day at work.
One of the most advanced driving simulators in the country is where some of the development for the Mercedes-AMG Project One takes place. The team has released a video showing off the amazing piece of technology that is also the ultimate gaming console for sim racing.
This impressive rig is used by Mercedes-AMG to tweak the vehicle’s dynamics in an early concept stage. The simulator allows engineers to experiment with modifications to the supercar, and then test them in real life to verify that they work.
Complex rigs allow the simulator to tilt and turn the Project One cockpit in order to match road curves. A curved screen that measures 29.5 feet (9 metres) in width is located in front of the driver. The huge image is created by five 4K projectors.
Mercedes-AMG can simulate normal roads using the simulator, but it’s much more fun to use it on a track such as the Nordschleife. Because racing drivers can be positioned at the same spot on track lap after lap, the team uses them to test the car. This allows engineers to make changes and allows the pilot to communicate with the engineer if things are working well.
This clip begins at 1:49. There is something very interesting to be seen. At 1:49, the instrument panel display has 9 in the middle. This appears to be the section that shows the current selected gear. The Project One will use an eight-speed gearbox. The hypercar deliveries won’t start until 2021 so it is possible that the company is looking into whether an additional cog might make the vehicle more efficient.
The Project One’s turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 has hybrid assistance and makes more than 1,000 horsepower (746kilowatts), or even more than 1,200 hp (895kW). Each of 275 will be made at $2.75million each.
