The Aston Martin Valkyrie would disagree.
Three and a quarter years have passed since Mercedes-AMG first unveiled the One concept hypercar. But we are still as excited as schoolgirls in September 2017, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The boys and girls of Affalterbach have been hyping up the F1-engined car on numerous occasions over the years. This preview video continues that long teaser campaign.
A quick but sweet clip shows the AMG One, presumably in its final form. It is wearing a sweet livery with red accents that signal the E Performance branding. This will most likely make its debut on the AMG One soon. GT73e . It is safe to say that the three-pointed star is very confident about the hypercar’s capabilities. She calls it “unmeasured,” unrivaled and unreal, while the hybrid powerhouse devours a track.
The AMG One is powered by the same powertrain that was used in Sir Lewis Hamilton’s F1 championship winning Mercedes F1 W06 hybrid race car. It was installed in 2015. The turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 is paired with four electric motors to produce more than 1,000 horsepower. Although we don’t yet have the final numbers for the hybrid powertrain, some claim it can produce more than 1,200 horsepower.
Mercedes encountered some problems during the development phase when trying to make the hypercar’s complicated engine comply with the stricter WLTP regulations. Deliveries were delayed by Mercedes because of this. They will resume later in the year. The price for each unit is $2.7 million, with only 275 units. All of the units have been long-sold.
The AMG One’s limited-run status means that owners won’t drive it a lot. However, the engine of the AMG One will need to be rebuilt once every 50,000 km (31,069 miles). It is difficult to imagine the cost of rebuilding such an intricate and fragile engine, which has its roots in Formula 1. We hope that not all these hypercars end up in garage queens. However, we are interested in the Nurburgring lap times.
Mercedes and AMG keep us informed about the One, but it’s been quite a while since we heard anything about the V12 Cosworth powered Aston Martin Valkyrie. The market is about to see electric hypercars, such as the Lotus Evija and Pininfarina Battista. Toyota expects to launch a road-going version its LeMans hybrid racer and Japan’s all electric Aspark Owl.
