Mercedes-AMG Will Kill RWD; All Future Models will be AWD

Even the AMG GT can be converted to an AWD layout.

Last week, Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers announced all new models of the company will be electrified. All AMGs next generation will be equipped with an all-wheel drive layout, as that is what customers want.

Moers stated that pure RWD cars no longer are the preferred choice of clients, and that it is not a good idea to spend money on developing them. According to Moers, “Customers have given the answer and most want four wheel drive.” “Back when the AMG E-Class had rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive was an option, more than 90 percent of customers chose 4WD. The new E63 has drift mode and is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, but also with four-wheel drive.

Yes, the AMG GT supercar is the flagship model of the division. It’s following the same route for the next-generation model. Because customers in this niche segment often ask about all-wheel drives.

Moers stated, “When I ask customers to tell me about the GT they want to know about all-wheel drive.” “Regarding competition, this is what the AMG lacks in terms of usability. Munichers, for instance, ask for four-wheel drives. I believe it is for safety and stability.

Moers also confirmed that the V12 engines would soon be obsolete for Mercedes-AMG. Moers stated that the Final Edition is the last 12-cylinder model of the brand and that even the V8 could cause problems for smaller AMG-branded cars like the C63.

“We are still responsible for V12s, maybe Maybach will use them in the next-generation S-Class but not AMG. A high-powered, competitive V12 would require a new engine. In the modern times, there is not enough room for that.
