According to a recent report, Mercedes-Benz is developing a smaller version the G-Class that will launch in 2015 as the GLG.
While a lot of people are wondering (not us) why Mercedes-Benz is still making the G-Class, it seems that the German company plans on launching a smaller version of the G-wagen to rival the forthcoming replacement for the Land Rover Defender. Most likely it will wear the GLG moniker and should feature a fresh look, smaller engines along with a more powerful AMG version.
The new model, internally called the “mini-G”, will be based upon the A-Class and the GLA already confirmed (due in 2014). This will mean that there will be two crossovers built on the A-Class. Although the G-Class will have a similar shape to the GLG, it will have a more modern styling.
According to the same report, Mercedes may consider a front-wheel-drive version of its GLG. This is logical considering Land Rover is also working on something similar. The 4Matic version will still be available. It will transfer torque through an electronically controlled Haldex clutch. This is in contrast to the three differential locks on the GClass.
The engine powering it will be the same as those in the A- or B-Class. It will include a 1.6-liter unit with 122 horsepower (91 kW), and a 2.0-liter unit with 156 HP (116 kW), or 211 Hp (157kW). There will be four diesel engines available in addition to these gasoline engines. These include a 1.8-liter unit with 110 hp (81.1 kW), and a larger 2.1-liter unit that produces 136 hp (101.1 kW), 170 hp (126.6 kW) or 204 hp (152.2 kW). The GLG AMG, which will produce 350 horsepower (261kW), and will be available with a 7 speed automatic transmission, a revised front end, faster steering, and stronger brakes, is also expected to be available.
If the model is approved for production, you can expect a launch in mid-2015.
