Mercedes-Benz announced that they are looking for niche markets to offer an open-top SUV. Wolf-Dieter Kurz (Mercedes-Benz vice-president for sports cars and SUVs), stated that there is a market in a convertible SUV, even though the G-Class Cabrio was scrapped back in 2013, due to a lack of demand and production issues. While he stated that they will eventually find a market for a new model, he also admitted that it would be difficult due to the fact that convertibles aren’t popular in China.
Kurz said that they will continue to study the market and make a decision when they have determined whether the automobile world needs a convertible SUV. Mercedes-Benz will likely wait to see what happens to the Range Rover Evoque Cabrio before making a decision on whether it is worth creating a high-riding, roofless model.
