Mercedes-Benz EQV gets all-electric, pop-up camper van upfit

Tonke is the source of this versatile camper van.

Mercedes’ electrification efforts today are full steam ahead, but the company has been working toward EVs since years. The EQV is a battery-electric van that can travel more than 200 miles (321 km) per charge. It was introduced by Mercedes in 2019. Tonke has a new platform from which to create an all-electric camper van. It’s quite neat.

Tonke offers the Mercedes-EQV in two versions: Touring or Adventure. The Touring van is Tonke’s flagship model. It offers a more traditional camper van experience. The Touring van’s main draw is the two-seat rear bench, which folds into a double and provides all the essentials.

It features a 2-burner induction stovetop and a sink. The kitchen can be moved and can be pulled out to allow for outdoor cooking. The dinette table can be found in the kitchen. It is compatible with the swivel seats at the front. Tonke offers additional sleeping space with the optional roof-mounted tent. Tonke also adds a 100-amp-hour battery so that the camper can be powered off of the 90-kW vehicle’s battery.

The Adventure offers a slightly different experience. A three-seat bench can be transformed into a large bed. It is larger than the Touring’s, but a fraction smaller than a queen-size residential bed. Because it doesn’t have a kitchen, the Adventure isn’t as tough as the Touring. Tonke offers a slide-out trailer kitchen option. This kitchen comes with a gas-powered, dual-burner stove. It comes with a refrigerator and a sink.

The Adventure also comes with an interior table that folds out and two extra seats, which would allow for seven people to be seated in the camper. This van is a little less focused on the campervan experience.

Motorhomes, RVs and camper vans have seen a huge increase in popularity in the past few years. Electrification will change these vehicles as much as it is changing passenger cars. This camper van is the second to be built on the EQV. We can only imagine that there will be more in the future. VW already stated that it will create an ID. The EQV will soon have more competition because of the buzz camper vans.
