Mercedes-Benz will install CO2 air conditioning systems in 2017

The carbon dioxide (CO2) air conditioning system will be installed in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class, and S-Class starting 2017.

The carbon dioxide (CO2) air conditioning system will be installed in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class and S-Class starting 2017.

This was done to comply fully with the 2017 legal provisions. The first cars to benefit from the CO2 air conditioner system will be the E-Class as well as the S-Class, which are sold in Europe. They will both exceed EU climate protection requirements. The cabin will provide a pleasant feel-good climate, even in extreme heat.

The new system can withstand pressures of over 100 bar, which is ten times more than the AC systems currently in use. The engineers had to redesign the components according to the standards that were previously agreed upon by the other German car makers and suppliers.

Only the E and S models will be available in time to comply with the EU directive on January 1, 2017.

In the event of a frontal collision, the refrigerant/air mixture from the engine parts will be separated and cooled by a gas generator. This patent-pending system is currently being worked on by Mercedes-Benz.
