It could be part of the upcoming CLE family.
The CLS 450 4MATIC Coupe, which is the only model in the MercedesBenz CLSlineup available in the United States, starts at $72,950 MSRP for 2022 model year. The range-topping AMG CLS 53 trim in Europe is still available. However, it seems that the days of the current generation CLS may be over. New spy photos confirm that the German automaker is working on the successor to today’s CLS.
Although Mercedes was rumored to be threatening the four-door coupe, it appears that it has been given a second lease of life. Although this white prototype is a mule for new CLS, it still uses the same body as the previous model. It seems to be slightly stretched, and the wheel arches appear wider than the production model.
Although the next-generation Mercedes E-Class has been tested with its production body, it appears that the CLS is still not ready to wear production clothes. This test car has no camouflage, but that shouldn’t surprise. The new CLS will be available for public road testing with a production body, according to spy photographers.
The name CLS cannot be confirmed at this time. Mercedes is looking to reduce its model range. The C-Class, E-Class coupe and convertible will be eliminated. These models will be removed and replaced by the new two-door CLE. A four-door coupe may also be included in the future CLE family. It’s still too early to know what Mercedes is thinking about this vehicle.
The new CLS could share its underpinnings and the next-gen E-Class. This could indicate that it will be heavily electrified. It is possible to expect a range of hybridized turbocharged four- and six-cylinder powertrains. It is unlikely that a V8 model will be produced, and it doesn’t appear likely that a diesel option will either.
