Mercedes’ Emotion Start Makes Your Vehicle Louder on Start Up

Ford did the exact opposite a while ago.

Ford introduced a Good neighbor mode to its Mustang two years ago. This allowed you to start the Mustang’s powerful V8 without worrying about your neighbors reporting you. Ford made a smart move, especially since the Mustang’s active-valve performance exhaust can make a huge sound that could echo around a neighborhood.

Mercedes-Benz has done the exact opposite with its AMG models. The Emotion Start is a new feature on Mercedes-AMG models that allows you to increase the volume of your exhaust by pressing the ignition button.

Driver have a demonstration of this cool feature in their report. But here’s a short video clip of how it sounds.

How does it all work? It is actually quite simple. It’s as simple as pulling and holding a paddle shifter, before pressing the start/stop button. The Emotion Start button would activate and ignite the engine while the exhaust flaps are open. Emotion Start would also increase the engine’s starting rev to 2,100 RPM instead of the 1,800.

Your AMG will be louder, and you’ll feel more emotions as a driver of a well-built vehicle with a handcrafted engine. This feature might also be used by your neighbors to invoke emotions.

The Emotion Start feature in AMGs is a great one, but we have to admit that it is not possible with EVs or most hybrid cars. We will have to accept the silence of an electrified powertrain, especially as EVs are becoming more mainstream. The neighbors may be happy, but hey!
