It’s the best thing about driving today.
At the end of the month, the unusual G500 4×42 will be gone into the sunset as Mercedes announces it will stop producing its ultimate off-roader. The 6×6 version is a follow-up to the insanely competent (but in a good way) G500 4×42. It’s also the most expensive car to be equipped with the three-pointed star badge. This new G-Wagen is EUR231,693 in Germany, or $274,544 if you do a raw conversion.

It is not surprising that the G500 4×42 has been discontinued, especially when you consider the new G Class which will be released sometime next year. The extreme off-road machine is capable of handling any terrain thanks to its portal axles and impressive ground clearance of 450 mm (17.7 inches). The machine can be considered semi-amphibious because it has a fording depth 1,000mm (39.5 inches).
The Mercedes sits on 22-inch alloy wheels with 325/55R22 tires. These tires hug the portal axles, which have increased the track width by 299mm (11.7 inches) over the G-Class. The heart of the versatile Mercedes is the familiar biturbo V8 engine, which produces 422 horsepower (310kW).
You can even select a Sport mode, but you won’t be breaking Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglios Nurburgring SUV record anytime quickly. The G500 4×42 is a heavy 3,021 kilograms (6660 pounds) and doesn’t have the best handling.
Mercedes reminds us that the vehicle was first sold in dealerships in December 2015 due to a “phenomenal reaction” to the concept revealed earlier that year at Geneva Motor Show. The G500 4×42, unlike the 6×6 that was made in very limited quantities, is being advertised as a series production model. However, you won’t see it very often.
