There is no silent, wind in-your-hair cruising required for the zero emission Merc.
We can confidently say that Mercedes-Benz has made it clear that the lineup will be reduced to its essentials, meaning that models that sell are a large percentage of German automaker’s sales. The 2021 Mercedes S-Class was unveiled as a four-door sedan liftback.
The S-Class’s flagship model is not the only one to be stripped of coupe- and convertible options. As confirmed by Gordon Wagener, Mercedes chief designer, the 2022 Mercedes-EQS will not include coupe or convertible options.
coupes, convertibles will be less common in the future. These specialty cars will make up only 15% of the market, which tells a lot about the demand for them.
Wagener also provided a rough estimation of the future market, saying that 50% will be SUVs and 30% will be sedans. These numbers back Wagener’s next statement, that Mercedes will not be producing coupes or cabrios in all segments – electric cars included.
News of Mercedes reducing its lineup is not surprising. has been available since 2019. So the fact that the EQS will not get a special version is not surprising. We can expect more variety in the body styles of high-riding electric models, as they are expected to sell more than their lower-slung counterparts.
However, time will tell. There’s no reason to wait for a swoopy version EQS. Despite having four doors, the new flagship EV is already slick.
