The SL73 plug in hybrid will produce more than 800 horsepower.
The current-generation Mercedes SL (R231) hasn’t been getting enough media attention. Despite being one of the most important and historic nameplates in this lineup, we barely hear about it. The droptop has been around since 2013. However, don’t worry as an all-new car will soon be available.
According to Automobile Magazine, there are major changes in store for the luxurious convertible. Mercedes wants to reinvent the SL. It will be replaced by a lighter, more aerodynamic fabric roof like the R129. The next-generation Mercedes-AMG GT models are being developed with it. Rumors suggest that the cabin will be larger to allow for rear seats that people can actually use. According to rumours, the SL will be more spacious inside than the S-Class Coupe due to its longer wheelbase.
The all-new SL will be available with a variety of powertrains. It is expected to go on sale in 2021. The SL53 will increase the power output to 522 hp using a larger biturbo 4.0 liter V8, which will be found inside the SL63, where it will produce 612 hp.
A plug-in hybrid S73 will be the king of the crop. It includes the SL63’s hardware and an electric motor rated to 204 hp. This gives the PHEV a massive 800+ hp output and 738 pound-feet (1,098 Newton-meters) torque.
According to engineers familiar with the next SL, the model will feature rear-wheel steering, active stabilizer bars and the latest 4Matic all wheel drive.
We might see the next Sport Leicht launch in 2020 if it is indeed scheduled for 2021.
