Although details are scarce at the moment about Carlex’s six-wheeled X-Class, they look incredible.
Carlex Design has a lot of experience tuning the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. They have created luxurious versions and rugged models of the German brand’s new pickup. However, the firm’s next project is much more ambitious. The team is building a six-wheeled custom truck with an extended bed, brawny flared fenders, and a rugged chassis. The machine is called the X-Class Exy 6-x6 Concept.
This is not just an X-Class with an additional pair of wheels. Carlex has redesigned the front fascia, adding large intakes at the corners and a winch to the center. The revised hood features a scoop and fender flares with exposed rivets. They look like a 1980s punk jacket. The roof is adorned with an LED light bar. Side steps make it easier to get into the pickup from the side.
However, the biggest changes are made at the rear. Carlex mounts the truck with knobby, offroad tires to make room for an additional axle. The wheels are covered by huge fenders. The tailgate is covered in a huge X and the bumper has a new bumper that incorporates the exhaust outlets.
Carlex Design has not provided any details on this machine, other than the promise that it is currently under construction. The hood scoop suggests that additional power may be available. The X-Class’ current top engine is a turbodiesel 3.00-liter V6 that produces 258 horsepower (190 kilowatts), and 406 poundfeet (405 Newton-meters) torque through a seven speed automatic.
Carlex will have to do a lot of work to convert the X-Class into a 6×6. To power the wheels, it will require a second differential and driveshaft. To allow drivers to choose where the torque is sent, a new transfer case may be required. We are eager to see how Carlex does it.
