The hatch is produced entirely in Europe.
The Volkswagen Golf will not be made in Mexico starting in 2019. All production will be based in Europe. According to Al Volante Mexican, the brand’s decision is a result of employees’ union in Wolfsburg who want the hatch’s production to move entirely to Germany.
Volkswagen’s Mexican manufacturing has undergone changes since last year. Unofficial information suggests that the Beetle will be leaving VW’s Mexican plant at the end 2017 and will be replaced with the Tiguan in five- and seven-seat versions. The larger Tiguan Allspace will also be exported to Brazil, and the United States.
With the decline in Golf sales in many countries like Brazil, where the compact hatch segment continues to lose its share, the workers’ union demand is increasing. This has led to David Powels (VWP president for South America) considering major restructuring the marque’s operations across the continent. This is part of a longer-term plan that includes preparations for next generation Golf.
After the Golf has left Volkswagen’s Puebla factory it will be refocused on the production and delivery of the Jetta mid-size sedan. This new generation will arrive in the first half 2018.
