The 911 GT1 Strassenversion is a Porsche model that sports car enthusiasts will be familiar with. It was a mid-engined Nine Eleven built for homologation purposes. This was not the first 911 to have the engine between the axles. However, it wasn’t the last. Two years ago, the 911RSR was released by Zuffenhausen.
The 911 mid-engined 911, a thoroughbred race car, is limited to the track. However, we don’t lose hope for a street-legal version. According to a March 2017 statement by Porsche’s head of GT car development, it may happen. Andreas Preuninger stated the following in his interview with Autocar :
There’s nothing in the near future, but it is possible to add some excitement to the car in the medium-term.” This would add some excitement to the carThis was back in the day. A speculative rendering of a mid-engined 911 has been published now by Motor1.com friend Rain Prisk. He took design cues form Porsche’s Taycan electric sedan, and added a huge rear wing that would be worthy of a GT3 RS track-focused GT3 RS version.
This hypothetical 911 has the flat-six engine moved closer to the center, so it is no longer possible to have a 2+2 seating arrangement like its rear-engined counterpart. It has been converted into a pure two-seater sports carWhile it remains to be determined if there will be another road-approved 911 with the mid-engine layout, this render shows Porsche’s most recent design language. It would make a perfect match for a 911 GT1 spiritual successor.
Porsche is close to introducing the 992-gen, the eighth-generation of its core model. The new 911 will make its debut on the European market in the first half of next year, as it was confirmed at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
