Mini is currently working on two versions for the next-gen electric hatch.
Mini plans to completely overhaul its model range in the coming years. The core three door model will come in both all-electric and combustion powertrains. There will also be many new products to the range. Customers can expect a significant tech upgrade to the Mini hatch. A new report by Autocar sheds light on the changes throughout the range.
British automaker Mini will completely overhaul the Mini Electric. It will not be mechanically similar to the version that is powered by a combustion engine. It will instead sit on an EV platform, and will be back to Mini’s roots in terms od dimensions and weight. According to the brand, the zero-emissions hatch will be a bit shorter than the previous model due to a smaller front overhang. The wheelbase will increase slightly by approximately 1.57 inches (40 mm).
The company is expected to launch two electric versions the three-door hatchback as part of its electrification strategy. Base Cooper models will be equipped with a 40-kWh battery that has a range of approximately 185 miles (297 km) on two charges. The Cooper S will have a 50 kWh battery pack, more than 200 horsepower (147 Kilowatts) and a higher peak output. The maximum range is expected to be approximately 250 miles (402 km).
The new Mini EV will be lighter than the model it replaces, despite having a larger battery pack. Autocar also stated that it will have a lower center gravity and a slightly rear-biased weight distribution. The new Mini EV will also be made in China.
Autocar reports that the combustion engines will be built on the FAAR platform. You shouldn’t expect major changes to Mini models, as they will continue to be available with a variety of turbocharged three- and four-cylinder engines. It seems unlikely that a diesel option will be offered at this time.
