Mitsubishi Pajero Final Edition Says Goodbye To Japan’s Legend

Prices in Land of the Rising Sun start close to $40,000.

An off-road legend is retiring. The Mitsubishi Pajero will soon cease to be available in Japan, where it has been sold since 1982. The Japan Pajero will soon be discontinued with a Final Edition model.

The automaker intends to produce 700 units of the rugged SUV. Production will end in August. The price for the limited edition model starts at Y=4.53million, which is equivalent to approximately $40,489 at current exchange rates. Mitsubishi The Pajero will be available in more than 70 countries around the world.

The Final Edition model is well equipped with a 7-inch screen for the infotainment systems, leather seats with power driver and front passenger, roof rail, electric sunroof and a winter package. The large screen at the center console can be accessed as an option, while some of these features are standard.

A 3.2-liter diesel engine produces 190 horsepower (142 Kilowatts) as well as 441 Newton-meters (325 pounds-feet). The engine can reach all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, Super-Select 4WD II All-Wheel-Drive system and a lockable rear differential.

2006 saw the debut of the current Pajero at the Paris Motor Show. The Pajero was a significant step up from its predecessor. It also received several facelifts in 2009 and 2010, 2012 and 2015. These helped to keep it competitive on the market. There were three V6s, a 3.5-liter V6, and the 3.8-liter version of each engine available depending on market conditions. Two four-cylinder diesels were also available.

Mitsubishi experienced a significant drop in Pajero demand in Japan in 2018, delivering less than 1,000 units. Its sales slump was mainly due to the SUV’s poor economy ratings, which were significantly outweighed by the brand’s more efficient offerings such as the Outlander PHEV or Eclipse Cross.
