Nearly 8,000 pony cars with high-powered engines are affected by the campaign.
UPDATE: Ford Canada has provided us with updated recall numbers from a source. Michelle Lee-Gracey from Ford Canada informs us that there are around 8,026 affected vehicles, including 6,523 in America, 957 in Canada, 346 in Mexico, and 59 in federalized territory. The text below has been updated accordingly. This information has been added to the press release.
The 2015-2017 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustangs owners will need to stop enjoying the sounds of the pony cars’ powerful V8 and make a trip to their dealer to be subject to a possible dangerous recall. Any examples that are still in stock will be subject to a stop sale.
A document posted to the Mustang6G forum shows that Ford discovered that the tube connecting to the engine oil cooler had insufficient crimps. This could have caused it to leak. The lack of oil can cause engine seize if owners don’t notice it. It is possible for the fluid to catch fire.
The campaign is affecting “7,885 vehicles [ See Latest] located within the U.S.A, Canada, Mexico, and EMS federalized territory,” Ford Safety Communications Manager Elizabeth Weigandt informed Motor1 via email. From February 24, 2015 to August 30, 2016, the production dates for this population are: Ford dealers cannot deliver or demonstrate any vehicles that are in need of repairs because they have a stop sale. This issue has not been linked to any fires, injuries or accidents.
Dealers will replace the engine cooler tube assembly.
The Shelby GT350 Mustangs’ 5.2-liter V8 is equipped with a flat-plane crankshaft and produces 526 horsepower (392 Kilowatts) as well as 429 pound-feet (580 Newton meters) of torque. The engine’s redline of 8,250 rpm shows that it can also sing.
The Mustangs, which are range-topping models, are very agile. They are now available with MagneRide suspension and an aluminum strut tower brace. This also allows for extra cooling of the differential and gearbox.
The only available gearbox is the six-speed manual. However, that could change in the near future. A recent rumor suggests that Ford may add a dual-clutch transmission. It is not yet known how many gears it may have. However, the Ford GT already has a seven speed DCT. It is not difficult to see how engineers at Blue Oval took it from the supercar and put it in the pony car.
