Mustang Shelby GT500 takes on GT350R in Autocross Showdown

Let the snakes have fun.

It’s not the most powerful Mustang Ford, but it is the most powerful Ford has ever made. In horsepower, it surpasses the GT350R as well as the Ford GT. The GT500 is the GT350’s more affordable, less powerful sibling. However, being less powerful does not always mean you are less capable. Steeda, an aftermarket parts company decided to race the GT500 and GT350R around an autocross track to determine which car would finish the fastest lap. You may be surprised at the results.

The GT500 is powered by a supercharged Ford 5.2-liter flat crank-plane V8 and a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. It produces 760 horsepower (567 Kilowatts) as well as 625 pound-feet (847 Newton-meters) in torque. The 5.2-liter V8 produces 526 horsepower (392 Kilowatts) in the GT350R, and 429 lb-ft (582 Newton meters) of torque. It is paired with a six speed manual gearbox.

Although the GT500 has more power than the GT500, it isn’t able to make the same amount of power on the autocross course. It is also a little more difficult to get the engine down to asphalt with the stock Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. This Shelby is the same.
