We don’t just say that these cars are equally matched.
It’s not the unlikely matchup between a drag racing video and a Road Test TV, but it’s something that we haven’t seen before. It’s not an unlikely pairing between a Ford Mustang, and a Range Rover Sport Vr. It’s actually the outcome of their first race which has us all shook.
With its supercharged V8 of 5.0-liters making 575 horsepower (429kilowatts), the SVR is Land Rover’s prizefighter. It goes to all four wheels. SVR is listed as the Fastest SUV in the World. This Mustang has the S550 fascia from 2015 to 2017, which means that the 5.0-liter V8 is 435 horsepower (324 kW) and the rear tires are able to drive it. Although it appears that the SVR has the edge, the SVR is approximately 1,500 pounds heavier.
This mass is sure to level the playing field and this is where things get very exciting. This equality is evident in dramatic fashion when both cars run identical elapsed speeds and trap speeds of 13.05 seconds at 110 mph. Technically, the Mustang was slightly faster than the 109.13 Mustang, with a speed of just 109.48 instead of 109.13. It was also 3 thousandths faster down the track. That’s still a pretty good race. It’s difficult to do this with two identical vehicles or two vehicles from different genres.
Wait a minute, the Mustang came in ahead of the Range Rover with a significant starting line advantage. The timing systems at drag strips differ for each lane. The clock doesn’t begin running until the car moves away from the start line. The Mustang crossed the line more than half a second faster than the SVR (identified at the top left photo that shows each driver’s reaction time), which, while it may not seem like much, actually means more than a car length. It’s possible for the Range Rover to have waited at the red light for several minutes before moving on, but the time remaining would be the same. However, the reaction time would be disastrously slow.
However, that’s not the end. The launch of the second race is almost equal between these two rivals. Who will win the day? We’ll let the video tell you that, but it is a very close race based on the first run.
