New Mustang Mach-E Police Car Unveiled by NYPD at New York Auto Show

These coppers will silently patrol the streets of New York during this summer.

The US police cars are either large SUVs or big sedans with massive V8 engines. The New York Police Department took a different route with their latest patrol car.

A Ford Mustang Mach-E was unveiled at the 2022 New York Auto Show. It is the latest addition of the NYPD’s police cars. NYPD says this is part the agency’s efforts to have a more sustainable fleet. This initiative began in 2020 when hundreds of hybrid vehicles were received and a Tesla Model 3 was converted to a police car last years.

The NYPD’s latest patrol car is the Ford Mustang GT. It is powered by two permanent magnet synchronous motors that can produce up to 480 horsepower (358 Kilowatts) or 634 pound-feet (860 Nm) of instantaneous torque. The police vehicle is supposed to be able to run on electric power for up to 270 miles (435 km), but we believe it has a shorter range due to its added weight.

This is because, in addition to the standard decals, sirens and lights mounted on an electric crossover, NYPD’s Mustang Mach-E GT also has ballistic door panels on both the front doors and window inserts. The bulletproof specifications of the Mustang Mach-E GT are not known.

Only one of 100 Mustang Mach-E GT police cars will be used by the NYPD, as shown at the 2022 New York Auto Show. ABC News states that the electric patrol cars will be on the streets by summer.

Kathy Hochul, New York Governor, announced the installation of ten fast chargers at LaGuardia Airport. They will be able charge compatible EVs within 30 minutes.

These chargers are part NYPA’s EVolve NY fast charging network that aims to install 100 high-speed charging stations throughout the state.
