Although it’s loud, the PDK works just fine.
The Porsche 911 is now available in its latest edition. The GT3 touring package takes everything you love from the 911 GT3 but wraps it up in a subdued package. The visual punch is reduced, but the powertrain is identical. This creates a strange problem for allGT3 buyers in California, who want to row their own boats.
This is strange because the sound problem affects only the 911 GT3 equipped with a manual transmission. Porsche’s standard gearbox is a seven speed PDK. This car can be sold in California for reasons that we don’t understand. Porsche offers at least one version, the GT3 Touring with the PDK transmission.
We don’t know the exact nature of this regulation, nor are we aware of any exhaust system modifications between manual-equipped and PDK cars that could lead to a noticeable difference in sound. California clearly sees the difference. We don’t know if California’s registration process prohibits buyers from crossing the border to obtain a six-speed GT3 and then bringing it home. Porsche will continue to work towards getting the manual approved by the state. However, that won’t happen until at least 2022.
The 911 GT3 will be available for delivery in the fall 2021. Dealers will receive the 911 GT3 Touring in early 2022.
