New York’s 2019 Acura RDX Gets a Brand-New Design

It is a carbon copy from the Detroit prototype SUV, which is not a bad thing.

Acura displayed its RDX prototype at the Detroit Auto Show. We knew the production version would look very similar. The 2019 AcuraRDX has been officially unveiled at the 2018 New York Auto Show. We can now see that the prototype was a exact ringer, both inside and outside. We left Detroit feeling positive about Acura’s new people-mover.

The 2019 RDX is not just a redesign. Acura claims this is the most comprehensive redesign of the model’s history. The new platform extends the RDX’s wheelbase by 2.6 inches (6.66 centimeters), giving it more space inside for people and their belongings. The RDX is still a 5-passenger SUV. However, the modifications allow for a flat rear floor to accommodate cargo space.

It is said that the new architecture is stronger because it uses high-strength steel for more than half of its construction. Acura claims that the new RDX features a five-link independent rear suspension, variable-ratio power steering, adaptive dampers, as well as a revised SUV’s handling. The new RDX also features the torque vectoring SH–AWD system from Acura, something that was absent in the previous model. The system allows Acura to send up to 70% of its power rearward. All of that power can also be distributed to either the right or left side to aid in handling and to save you from getting out of control.

The engine that will provide all that power is a turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged that produces 272 horsepower (203 Kilowatts) as well as 280 pound-feet (382 Newton-meters). Acura used the same mill in its prototype. Technically speaking, peak horsepower is slightly lower than the current model. However, torque is slightly higher and is available over a wider range. The transmission is a 10-speed automatic, with paddle shifters mounted on each wheel.

Acura will offer the A-Spec version of the new RDX to emphasize its sporty design. Although the upgrade does not add any mechanical improvements, the appearance package gives the crossover an even sharper look, with black accents and larger wheels.

The new RDX is almost identical to the prototype. It features a new Diamond Pentagon grille that follows the company’s new design ethos, which was also seen on other vehicles such as the RLX. Although the front fascia looks slightly different than the prototype’s, the Jewel Eye headlights and the body lines that extend rearward are identical. The interior is the same, featuring a lot of leather and high-quality materials. Traditional analog gauges are also present, as well as a 10.2-inch central display. The display can be accessed using a new touchpad interface that does not require users to locate a cursor on it. The touchpad is also concave so drivers can see where they are touching the screen without having to look away from the road.

The 2019 RDX comes standard with a cool panoramic roof. The new 16-channel, 710 watt audio system plays the music. There’s also Apple CarPlay compatibility and 4G LTE in car WiFi available as part of AcuraLink Connected Services. AcuraWatch standard safety tech includes auto braking, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.

The 2019 Acura RX will be available in dealers by the end of this summer. Pricing is yet to be revealed.
