New York’s 2020 Hyundai Sonata debuts with style to spare

This is the American debut of the sharp sedan.

Last month, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata was made available worldwide. In fact, we’ve already driven it. The 2019 New York Auto Show will see Hyundai’s new sedan make its American debut. It’s as beautiful as ever.

The “Sensuous Sportiness”, Hyundai’s design language, which introduced the Korean model, is carried over here. The front features remain unchanged, with the angular headlights and aggressive LED accents. The rear features are completed by the directional wheels, which come in either 16- or 17-inch sizes. The 2020 Sonata boasts a 0.27 drag coefficient thanks to its updated styling.

Mike O’Brien (Vice President Product, Corporate and Digital Planning at Hyundai), said that the Sonata’s new shape “represents our vision for future Hyundai design.” It’s not just a pretty face.

The base turbocharged 1.6-liter four cylinder produces 180 horsepower (134 kilowatts), 195 poundfeet (226 Newton-meters), and a combined average of 31 MPG. The 2.5-liter engine produces 191 horsepower (142 kW) & 181 lbft (245Nm), and returns up to 33 MPG combined. The engines are paired with the same eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Sonata’s interior is tech-focused too. Hyundai calls it “Beautifully smart” and places a 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster behind the wheel. It can be customized for different driving modes or preferences. The dash is topped by a 10.25-inch HD infotainment display. It includes audio-video, navigation, standard Apple CarPlay functionality, and Android Auto functionality. As an option, Qi wireless charging, a head up display and even smartphone key technology can be purchased.

There are a few active and passive safety features that come standard on the new Sonata. The Advanced Driver Assistance System is an optional option that adds additional equipment such as forward collision avoidance and lane keep assistance, radar cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering technology, and radar cruise control.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata will go on sale in January, but there is no information on the pricing.
