Production will begin in the second half 2023.
The current Mercedes eSprinter model is only being sold in Europe. However, it is not available in the USA and Canada due to the zero-emission van’s safety and other performance specifications. The next-generation model will have a new Electric Versatility Platform which will allow the fully electric model to enter North American shores.
Mercedes-Benz announced that the next Mercedes eSprinter would be built in three locations, one in the USA.
Apart from the EUR350m ($410 million), investment in the new Electric Versatility platform that will underpin Sprinter, MercedesBenz also invests EUR50 million (around $58 million) in each plant for adjustment of production. The production of the next eSprinter is expected to begin in the second half 2023.
Mercedes announced that, in accordance with Ambition 2039, its passenger car and van plant will be CO2-neutral by 2022.
Arnhelm Mittebach, President & Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC, stated that “Our North Charleston plant would be the first to bring in the next generation of eSprinter to America.”
“We are proud to have been granted the trust and permission by Mercedes-Benz Vans to manufacture this vehicle. We are grateful for the support of the state of South Carolina, Charleston County and our team in developing our facility. This milestone is a significant step in our growth. We look forward to the next generation of eSprinter, which will ensure a sustainable future for both the company and the environment.
