The new CLAR architecture is hidden beneath the conservative styling.
These spy photos of the next BMW 3 Series are they fully exposed? They might not be, but they could be. These clever renderings are based on our spy photo source and show what the new Munich sedan might look like. These photos were based on spy shots that we have seen so far. As you can see, the update should not change the history of the model.
However, it does bring out the similarities that we have seen with larger 5Series. This is especially true at the front, with the lower fascia design and daytime LED running light. The radar sensor is also located in the middle of bumper, between the grille and the camera. Although the rear looks familiar, we believe the tail lights could have a red strip connecting them. This is a trend that we have seen in other manufacturers, and it makes sense for BMW’s four-door.
We know that the CLAR scalable architecture of the 5 Series will be used for the next 3 Series. It’s designed for longitudinal engine designs with rear-wheel drive and is expected to reduce the weight of the current model by up to 88 pounds (41 kilograms). This design also extends the wheelbase slightly, giving passengers more space inside. Even though the CLAR platform prefers rear-wheel drive variants, xDrive versions that turn all four wheels can still be expected.
The car is expected to launch with 340 horsepower (254kW) from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. However, a diesel with slightly less horses and more torques will be available in European markets. The launch of hybrid and fully-electric versions is expected later. There will also be a hardcore version of the M3.
We are not sure when, but we think it could be at the 2018 Frankfurt Motor Show.
