It could also be called the CX-50.
Because Mazda is a small automaker, prototype sightings of the CX-5 are rare. If we only consider the volume of sales, the CX-5 is the most important Zoom Zoom model. In 2020, when the demand for the crossover fell by 18.7 percent, 361,051 units were shipped.
Since late 2016, the second-generation Mazda model has been available. It appears that Mazda is currently testing prototypes with the production body hidden under camouflage. Our colleagues received photos from a reader, who saw the next CX-5 riding on large alloy wheels in two-tone colors in Southern California.
It’s tempting to say that it’s a facelift and not the next-gen model, but that’s understandable considering the subtle design changes. If you look closely, however, you will notice that the quarter glass is wider than ever and the fuel cap has been moved to the corner of your taillight. The rear doors are a little longer, but the plastic body cladding around the wheel arches appears larger.
The grille on the front fascia is now less prominent than it was before. It is also flanked by slimmer LED lights. Although the hood is more prominent with a large bulge and has a lot of lines, its overall appearance has not changed. The rear end is the same, with the exception that the taillights appear to be reaching further than the CX-5.
Many speculation surrounds the third-gen model. Some suggest it will be renamed CX-50 in order to reflect its larger size. According to a report from Japan, Mazda engineers have switched the crossover to the new rear wheel-drive platform. It also features an inline six engine. The diesel engine is the most likely to replace the existing six-cylinder motor. However, smaller 2.5-liter powertrains will also be available. At least one hybrid model is also possible.
These details should be taken with a grain of salt, as Mazda has not yet revealed the direction it intends to take with the CX-5 replacement. The camouflage isn’t extensive so a reveal could happen before the end or early in 2022. It is possible that it will be available in the United States during the model year 2023.
