Nico Rosberg began the Monaco Formula 1 weekend by checking out a special concept car. F1 world champion Nico Rosberg had the rare opportunity to ride shotgun in the Mercedes Benz EQXXX, one the most efficient vehicles in automotive history. It is not fair to call this prototype a show car. However, Markus Schafer, chief technology officer at the automaker, explained earlier this year that it is more like a tech program.
Aerodynamics play a crucial role in achieving maximum efficiency in a car. The EQXXX has a drag factor of 0.17 due to many aerodynamic tricks. Although it is not visible in the photos, the vehicle is very compact. It measures approximately 182.3 inches (463 cm) and has a wheelbase measuring 110.2 inches (280 cm). This makes it slightly smaller than, for instance, the C-Class.
Nico talks about aerodynamic solutions for the EQXX, then he discusses weight-saving measures. Mercedes used a variety of tricks to reduce the vehicle’s weight, including aluminum brakes and a carbon roof. The most important factor in reducing weight is the low weight of the battery. It weighs just 1,091 pounds (495 kg) for a 100-kWh pack. The EQXXX is 3,858 lbs (1.750 kg) and slightly heavier than the C-Class C300.
Nico moves on to the interior of the car, where a Mercedes employee tells him he’s not qualified to drive the EQXX. Nico, the F1 champion, is clearly disappointed.
