Official details emerge about the VW Golf VII

The Volkswagen Golf 7th Generation will weigh 100 kg less than the predecessor.

We are getting closer and closer to the launch of the highly anticipated seventh generation Volkswagen Golf  It will be unveiled on September 4th and now we know that the German automaker has managed to shave off 100 kg (220 lb) compared to the Golf VI by using stronger steel for minimizing the metal content, which will result in a 23 percent lower fuel consumption and 13.9 percent less CO2 emissions.

According to a statement by VW from Wolfsburg, Germany, these new materials and the associated production processes are part the VW Group’s MQB modular assembly system. They will be used to produce no less than 40 models small- to medium-sized, or 3.5 million vehicles.

The German automaker claims that this shared architecture will result in a 20% reduction in production costs, 20% lower one-time expenditures, and a 30% shorter manufacturing time. Volkswagen will use the savings to develop new models and upgrade the car’s entertainment system.

The new Golf VI will weigh 56 mm more than the existing model, and it will also be 13 mm wider, 28 mm shorter, and measure 4255 mm long, 1799mm wide, and 1452mm high. The wheelbase will increase by 59mm, and the track widths will increase by 8 mm in front and 6 inches at the back. The result is a 15 mm increase in legroom, 31mm more shoulder space in the front, and 30mm for passengers sitting in back. Golf VII will provide additional elbow room of 22 mm (rear), and 20 mm in front.

The boot will be 30 liters larger, making it a total of 380 Liters. Additionally, the overall floor width will be 228mm wider than before at 1,272mm. The loading lip will measure 685mm (17mm shorter than before), making loading your car easier. Meanwhile, the boot’s aperture width will increase to 1023mm (up 47mm).

Because the Golf VII will receive an electronic parking brake, the center console will be larger than ever before. This will allow for significant space to be freed up. VW also stated that the standard equipment level of the new Golf will be 12kg lighter (7 kg due to a new seat design and 3kg from an electrical wiring loom). The base model will weigh in at 1,050 kg (2314) lb.

Ulrich Hackenberg, VW’s head for development, confirmed that the Golf VII will have a progressive steering system. This will offer different levels of assistance as well as five driving profiles: Eco Sport, Normal and Individual.

We don’t know much about the engine lineup at this time, but we do know it will include a 4-cylinder turbocharged, direct injection gasoline unit with 138 horsepower (103 kW/ 140 PS). It will be mated to the most recent version of the 7-speed dual clutch transmission by the company. This will return 58.9mpg-UK (4.8l/100km on the European combined cycle) and CO2 emissions will only be 112g/km.

Volkswagen will show off the GTi hotter version at the Paris Motor Show. It is expected that the updated version of Audi’s 4-cylinder turbocharged, direct injection gasoline engine with 222 horsepower (165 kW/ 225 PS) will be available towards the end of next month.
