Production versions are certain, regardless of whether MR2 is available.
Although Lexus shared some details about its zero emission hypercar, Toyota isn’t being as generous. There have been rumors about a MR2 revival for many years. However, this Sports EV seems to have the proportions and performance of a small-sized vehicle. Gazoo Racing’s badge is proudly displayed on the front bumper of the 2-seater EV era “mid-ship run-about 2 seater”. It’s not a new concept to have a tiny Toyota sports car. The SFR concept was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2015. The Sports EV is larger than the previous production model, with a removable targa roof. It is also more aggressive and angular than the S-FR, which suggests it’s at a different level of performance.
We expect the production version to have a rear-wheel drive layout. This is because Toyota will avoid AWD as it would increase weight and make the vehicle more expensive. The Sports EV isn’t as intense as Lexus Electrified Sports so it will likely be lower up in the hierarchy. We should not forget that Toyota is also working to electrify a completely different animal. The Super Sport is a hypercar that produces over 1,000 horsepower from a hybrid V6. It comes from Toyota’s Le Mans program. Although it isn’t yet clear if the road-legal version will go on sale, we are keeping our fingers crossed. The nameplate concept was very promising in early 2018.
