Officially Revealed as a Mazda-Backed Retro MX-5 by Hurtan Grand Albycin

The coachbuilder was approved by Zoom-Zoom.

What is a Hurtan? The Spanish coachbuilder was first mentioned in July 2017, when the Granada-based boutique marque made headlines for its quirky takes on the Chrysler PT Cruiser, and Fiat Ducato. As a reminder, we have attached a gallery of both models to this page. Today’s story will focus on the 2021 Grand Albaycin.

The retro Mazda MX-5 is available in two versions: a traditional roadster and a targa-topped Miata RF model. Hurtan said that Mazda gave their blessing to the project. The new model will only be 30 cars each in 2021. Customers can choose from either a Heritage or Bespoke model, the former having a more classic design and the latter having a more sporty look.

Grand Albaycin’s main purpose was to blend retro styling with modern hardware. It used the ND-generation Miata base. Hurtan does not specify which era of cars inspired the Grand Albaycin, but it is clear that we are getting a 1960s British roadster feel. We think the swoopy rear and voluptuous wheel arches are Austin Healey Sprite or MG MGA.

Hurtan proudly states that the Grand Albaycin has been “powered by Mazda” and still uses the original 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter gasoline engines, which produce 132 horsepower and 184 horsepower. Although power has not been reduced from the MX-5 standard, four exhaust tips have been added to the Grand Albaycin, which some argue is too many for anything below 300 horses.

When the order books open, the full unveiling of this car is set for Saturday. We hope Hurtan will release more images, including interior shots. We’ve seen the interior a lot already thanks to spy photos showing prototypes with new wood trim and cream-colored leather upholstery. The cabin layout of the Miata’s test vehicle was identical to that of the Miata.Although pricing details are not available, Hurtan states that it is looking to expand its distribution network with distributors in Germany and France, Norway, Italy and Russia.
