In just 4.1 seconds, you can run up to 62 mph (100 km/h)
Volkswagen Motorsport has taken the teaser to its latest model. The R5 specification, which weighs in at 1,320 kg (2,910 lbs) and is based on the Polo GTI hot hatchback model, has been created in collaboration with Skoda. It has been available since 2015 as the Fabia R5.

The track-only Polo GTI is powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that’s mounted transversely. It also benefits from direct fuel injection. The similarities end here. While the street-legal version is powered by a 2.0-liter engine that produces 200 horsepower (147kilowatts), and 236 poundfeet (322 Newton-meters), the race car uses a smaller, 1.6-liter motor that generates more power. The engine is rated at 272 horsepower (200 kW) as well as 295 lbft (400 Nm). While the regular Polo GTI has front-wheel drive, it’s rated at 272 HP (200 kW).
You can see the differences in the gearboxes used by the R5 and the R6. The R5 uses a race-spec sequential five-speed transmission instead of the standard model with a dual-clutch six-speed automatic. A six-speed manual will be available later in 2018.
The Polo GTI R5 has more power and AWD which makes it much faster than the road car version. It can go from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 4.1 seconds. This is 2.6s faster than the street-model equipped with the DSG.
VW has announced that its new race car will be homologated next year and will begin customer deliveries in 2018’s second half.
The Polo GTI is now on sale in Germany for EUR23,875 (a manual model will be available next year, which should make it cheaper). VW released new images of the agile five-door hatchback to celebrate its launch. You can see them below, along with the regular Polo.
