Spoiler alert! It is not referring to reliability.

The 996th generation Porsche 911 offered many features, including water cooling, more power and new styling. After a customer request, the German automaker produced a bulletproof 996 Carrera in the middle of the 1990s. YouTuber The Nine Eleven Guy showcases the vehicle in his most recent video.

According to legend, Mercedes-Benz was making bullet-proof cars just up the road from Stuttgart for diplomats and royalty. Porsche, feeling a little left out, decided to join the party quietly with its 911 Carrera. Although it is not known who ordered this special car, rumours suggest that it was a Porsche executive who was afraid of being chased by an angry mob.

We’d be remiss not to mention that the clientele looking for such a car would likely want to blend in a bit more – not behind the wheel of a Porsche wearing dragonfly turquoise metallic paint – but we’d wager the German automaker was leaning towards the hidden-in-plain-sight ethos. It looks like any other 911 from the outside.

There are many modifications to the car, but the main feature is the 20mm thick (.78 inch) glass that surrounds the cabin. The rear-glass also keeps its heating elements. Porsche chose Dyneema, which is 15 times stronger than steel and weighs the same as steel. This machine was subject to quality control testing by the German automaker. It was able to withstand gunfire from both a 9mm pistol or a.44 caliber revolver.

The added protection does mean that the vehicle weighs in at approximately three metric tons (6.613 pounds), so it’s not what you would call fast. It was built before the turbo version was released. This car is a significant piece of Porsche history, but it’s not well-known.
