The Octavia, Golf, Leon compact triofecta of VW Group has been updated for 2020, along with the Renault Megane. However, European competitors are still far behind. The all new Peugeot 308 will launch in 2021. It will be mechanically similar to the Opel / Vauxhall Astra for the first time. Two plug-in hybrid powertrains will be available, in addition to the three- and four-cylinder gasoline engines and diesel engines. The report also states that the most powerful of the two PHEVs is expected to be reserved for a range-extending Astra OPC / RXR using the system inherited form the Grandland X plug-In hybrid4.

Autocar claims that the hot hatch will be all-wheel-drive and have a combined output 296 horsepower and 432 pound-feet (332 lb-ft) of torque. The Astra OPC will feature an identical PHEV system and should be faster than the crossover due to its lower weight. The electrified Grandland X sprints at 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h), in 6.5 seconds, and reaches its maximum speed of 136 mph (219 km/h).

The Grandland X Plug-In Hybrid will be inherited by the Astra OPC. It will use a turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline motor, dual electric motors and the same eight-speed auto transmission. The crossover’s 13.2-kWh battery can provide 31 miles (50 km) of electric range. However, the hatchback’s lighter weight and more aerodynamics may allow for a few more miles.

Although it is not clear if the OPC will be available alongside the regular Astra from day one, logic suggests that Opel will wait until then before adding the finishing touches. We expect an electrified 308 PSSE to replace the GTi, according to the PSA Group.
