Opel is the Opel of tomorrow. It’s all-electric, self driving, and bold.
Opel unveiled a concept model last month to showcase the future cars of the automaker. The veil has been lifted and we now have a stunning all electric compact SUV with coupe appeal. The Opel GT X Experimental is the conceptual successor to the Opel Monza, GT concepts and the first “tangible outcome” of the brand’s plans to “sharpen it profile.”
It measures just 160 inches (4.063 millimeters). The alloys look larger than the 17-inch wheels that it rides on. An electric powertrain that uses a compact 50-kWh next generation lithium-ion battery and inductive charging provides the motivation.
Opel proudly announces that the GT X Experimental doesn’t “pretend” to offer fully autonomous driving, but instead offers Level 3 self-driving capabilities. It can perform all aspects of driving, but must respond to any request for intervention.
Opel’s future models will also adopt a new design theme with the concept. The marque’s logo now occupies the center of attention, while Opel Compass, which organizes design elements along two strong lines that intersect with the Blitz, is the organization of the design elements. The taillights are designed to mirror the headlights at the back.
Interior design follows the same minimalistic formula and opts to “visual and digital detox”. The cabin’s airy interior features a single panoramic roof panel and a side-window section. A large infotainment screen dominates the dashboard, hiding the air vents. Two smaller screens show side views taken by small pop-out cameras that replace traditional side mirrors.
“With our PACE! Our PACE! plan gives us a clear vision of what we want for Opel’s future,” Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller says. Our return to sustainability will be influenced by the strong brand identity that is defined by our values, which are German, approachable, and exciting. The Brand Concept demonstrates how these values will be reflected in our products in future.
