It’s a great day for diesel-powered-Wrangler hopefuls.
In the USA, the JL generation Wrangler comes in two engine options: either the normally-aspirated Pentastar V6 (3.6-liter) or the turbocharged four pot 2.0-liter (both gasoline power plants). This is a bit disappointing for diesel lovers, given the enormous amount of torque this engine type provides.
But, there are still hope. New codes are appearing in the Jeep dealerships’ ordering system. One of these codes has been confirmed to be for a 3.0L V6 CD diesel with engine stop (ESS) system.
This is order code 26 which JL Wrangler Forums has confirmed to be for the highly sought-after diesel power plant. The engine will be available in Sport, Sahara and Rubicon trims. It will also be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 3.0L will have a larger displacement than the 2.2L turbodiesel four cylinder engine in Europe. It is expected to produce a lot more power than the previous 200 horsepower (149 kilowatts), and 332 pound feet of torque (450 Newton meters) produced by the former. However, the exact output numbers are still to be determined. It could be close to the diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee’s 260 horsepower (194 kW) or 442 lbft (599 Nm).
Other than 26 there were two codes in the ordering system. These codes are order codes 22-25. Although the latter is the upgraded 3.6L engine with belt start generator (BSG), the transmission that comes with it has yet to be revealed.
The order code 22 remains a mystery. JL Wrangler Forums users speculate that this could be the 3.0-liter diesel CRD engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. However, that information is a guess and not a guarantee. Jeep will confirm the order code, but for now Wrangler owners who are hopeful should keep their cash.
