It can go anywhere!
Over the past few years, motorhomes and RVs, as well as other forms of mobile living, have seen a surge in popularity. Perhaps our connected 21st century lifestyle makes these vehicles more visible. There is a lot happening in the RV industry, both from established companies and newbie DIYers. We found the latest, interesting build above: a 900-horsepower (671 kilowatts) GMC Kodiak Ambulance that’s ready to go on an off-road adventure.
This video shows a lot about the building process and the difficulties of converting an ambulance to a mobile home. The crew gutted and removed 6,900 pounds (3.129 kg) of interior space. The boat still weighs in at 18,000 lbs (8.164 kg). There’s a sink, a toilet, a shower, storage space and a stovetop inside. It’s almost everything you need for a few days in the wilderness. Unfortunately, the video ends before we can see the final interior.
The exterior of the ambulance was completed, with the creative, nautical-themed graphics and cool gray paint. It has an 8.5-inch suspension lift, and 40-inch tires. This gives it plenty of ground clearance. Although the video doesn’t cover specific details about the engine, it is said to produce 900 horsepower from its turbodiesel motor. Eco mode adjusts the engine to 600 horsepower (447 kW) or 1,100 pound-feet (1.491 Newton-meters). Efficiency, you know.
To reduce its weight, the ambulance has custom-made solar panels and a carbon fiber frame. The roof has solar reflective paint to regulate the interior temperature. It also houses an air conditioner unit and insulation. The overlanding ambulance serves as a reminder that you can make some really cool things if you have enough knowledge, time, and money.
