Duterte’s destruction continues.
After the importer claimed that the McLaren 620R was a Porsche Cayman, the Philippine authorities took the McLaren 620R . The claim was made to avoid paying taxes. The government isn’t happy with tax dodgers and the car, along with many other high-end cars has been taken away. The destruction was posted by the Bureau of Customs to Facebook.
According to the post on social media, the cars were illegally imported between 2018-2020. The 620R was taken to the big junkyard in a sky with some really impressive metal. Along with the McLaren, other cars were also destroyed. These included a 2007 Bentley Continental Flying Spur and a Porsche 911 C2S. A used Hyundai Genesis and a Toyota Solara. The vehicles were destroyed by authorities using a backhoe to crush them, making them useless.
Seven cars were also destroyed at the port along with 14 others. This follows the destruction of 17 other vehicles in February. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the Philippine president, ordered that illegally imported vehicles be destroyed in 2017 to demonstrate that his government is serious about crackingdown on illegal importers. At current exchange rates, the latest batch of cars was worth more than $1.1 million.
Duterte’s vehicular violence has been well documented. Nearly 100 cars were destroyed by the government in 2018 for $6 million. Although the public display of destruction is intended to discourage illegal importers, its value is doubtful as the country continues to import illicit goods. As criminals seek new ways to avoid the country’s strict import laws and high taxes they will likely destroy more cars in the future. However, the country also has a strong track record of catching them.
