Software optimization transmits more torque to the rear wheels, enabling a more engaging driving experience.
Polestar is now an independent electric performance brand that is part of the Volvo Car Group. This tweak will be available for Volvos with all-wheel drive. The software optimization modifies the distribution of torque by sending more engine torque to the rear wheels. This is only available for products that were built on the CMA or SPA platforms starting in 2019. However, a word of caution. This upgrade is not available for cars with the T6 Twin Engine hybrid powertrain or the T8 Twin Engine hybrid engine. These are already equipped with a rear-drive focal point thanks to an electric motor propelling it the rear axle.
The new Volvos with only combustion engines have more torque. However, the frequency at which this happens is increased, allowing for more tail-happy excitements and the same traction as an AWD car. Polestar claims the upgrade improves steering, gives the driver better control and makes the car more agile when cornering. We’ve already mentioned traction. There’s more when you pull away so the software optimization offers the best of both. The upgrade allows cars with upgraded features to be enabled by the driver. They can choose either the Dynamic Drive mode or the Electronic Stability Control.
Later this month, Polestar will offer software optimization for AWD-equipped XC40s, 60 Series and 90 Series Volvos with both gasoline and diesel engines. The latest in a series of Polestar upgrades for Volvos that include the torque boost for the rear-axle is just one example.Polestar is not only fiddling with Volvos but also works on its own car. A 600-horsepower plug in hybrid coupe will be hitting the streets next year.
