Technically, it’s possible but a decision is still pending.
Porsche finally added a 911 GT3 engine to its Cayman GT4 RS baby sports car. The Boxster will get the same treatment. It would be a yes. Drive.com.au had a conversation with the man in charge of GT cars. Andreas Preuninger stated that it is technically possible but that a decision must be made. “I could imagine something like this. It’s possible, feasible, and interesting. However it isn’t confirmed.
The VP of the 718 & 911portfolios echoed his sentiments. Frank-Steffen Walliser also spoke with Drive. He said that technically, it is possible. If we do it, I don’t know. It is a matter of where to place it. He also mentioned that a 718 Boxster Spyder RS, if it was given the green light, would not be a car for track use because of its folding roof. It was a “wonderful addition” to the RS lineup, and he said he would love to see it happen.
As a side note, the Mission R was a preview of an all-electric 718. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the ICE will drop overnight. Walliser stated to the Australian publication that they still have ideas and aren’t running out of ideas for high-performance versions (of the Boxster or Cayman ranges).
Boxster and Cayman will switch to EV power faster than the 911, while the 911 will continue to use its combustion engine for at most a decade. Walliser stated that weight and packaging are still the “enemy”, and an all-electric 911 will only be possible if these issues are resolved. Porsche is working on synthetic fuel to save the ICE, but it’s keeping its options open.
In 2023, the firm’s electric portfolio will expand to include the next generation Macan crossover. The gasoline-powered model will continue to be sold for a while before it is dropped completely.
