It seems like it is a cold day to test the new roadster.
Although the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS sports car is relatively new, Porsche has a much more powerful roadster in development. These spy shots give a better view of the 718 Boxster Spyder, which will be the top-of-the-range.
Instead of the GTS’ turbocharged 2.5 liter flat-four, the Spyder would get a version the 4.0-liter flat-6 from the 911 GT3. Porsche would probably tune the performance mill to produce 494 horsepower (368 kilowatts) for greater differentiation between the GT3 or Spyder models in its lineup. However, the Boxster would be hotter than the GTS’s 365-hp (271kW) GTS.
The Boxster Spyder was only available with a 6-speed manual. The new model will likely come with the Porsche PDK dual-clutch transmission.
Porsche will sporty-tune the Boxster Spyder’s appearance to match its power boost. The most significant change is the bikini-style, strapless top that attaches to the body. The roof could be manually deployed, saving weight over a motor-driven unit. These spy photos also reveal a new front fascia with deeper sills. The circular exhaust tips at the back are located farther apart from the normal center-exit arrangement. The placeholder parts of the headlights are seen in this test mule, although the final components can be seen in earlier photos (see below).
Expect big sport seats inside and a pared-down appearance that matches the Spyder’s position as the most sporty member of the Boxster line-up. You can also save weight by using less sound deadening.
The Boxster Spyder will be available in 2018 and likely debut in the first half. Coupe fans can expect the debut of the 718 Cayman GT4 at the same moment.
