This is how it works. Or do you?
This is unfair. We’re comparing an entry-level Porsche 911 Carrera against the race-inspired 911 GT3. The GT3 offers a significant performance advantage over the Carrera’s 379-hp (383 kW) with 502 horsepower and lighter weight. It’s certainly a close fight.
The main takeaway from the Carwow video, however, isn’t about how fast the GT3 is against a Carrera. It’s more of a reminder of how great the base Porsche 911 911 is. The Carrera can do sub-four second 0-60 runs and is quicker than the GT3. In the first side-by, race it beats the GT3 by a hair. The management of 502 high-revving horsepower is difficult. For a while, however, the Carrera reigned supreme. The GT3 was not a blur even when it finally passed.
The GT3 got a better start in the second race, but that race was a more even affair. On the first roll race with both cars in comfort mode, the GT3 has a bigger advantage. Because of its racing nature, the GT3’s transmission kicked down faster and the Carrera was unable to maintain a speed of 50 mph.
It’s quite different with the cars moving manually. The Carrera keeps going valiantly, and you wonder for a moment if the GT3 will pull away. The GT3 pulls away, but not as much as you would expect. The Carrera’s stopping distance was almost the same as the GT3 under braking, despite its lighter weight and racing parts.
Yes, the Carrera lost all matchups to the GT3. The $60,000 difference in the prices of the trims makes the 911 base model a very satisfying machine on many levels.
